Stagnant Ice

and

Collapse Areas

Stagnant ice and collapse areas show disintegration of glacial ice as it melts and often collapses into voids formed by meltwater beneath the ice surface. 

 

The photograph above shows the stagnant terminus of the Zmutt Glacier covered by rock debris and with many collapse areas in the upper third of the photograph.  This view is from the Hohbalmen Trail (Edelweissweg).
